Justin and I watched a documentary the other night called King Corn. Heard of it? I loved it!
The film is made by two friends who decide to move to Iowa to grow an acre of corn and find more about where their food comes from. They learn the ropes of farming corn, planting, pesticides and herbicides, harvesting, and most importantly where their crop may end up after it’s sold. This movie was really an eye opener for me. I wasn’t surprised by any of the farming details – genetically modified corn, heavy chemicals, big commercials farms squeezing out the little guy, etc. But I was surprised and deeply saddened by the images of the grain fed cows and the gigantic feed lots. Ultimately the movie shows, in my opinion, that corn is the sole reason for America’s obesity and poor health.
Watching movies like this can be so overwhelming because it leaves you feeling like nothing in this world is healthy! Trying to sift through all the smoke and mirrors feels like trying to move a mountain, but being educated is the first and most important step. Anyone have any other good documentaries I should see?
